Prepping for NaNoWriMo: Your Writing Desk

Sabra GilbertComment

Only a week and a half until NaNoWriMo begins! I'm super excited about it! October is a month of prepping. I've been writing blog posts, cleaning my apartment, and planning more details of my novel.

And don't forget putting together my writing playlist!

The less distractions that you have during a month of writing, the more writing you are actually able to accomplish!

This week, the type of prepping that I took to was getting my writing area ready! Here are some tips for you to do the same!

1| Clean up Your Writing Area

- I recommend a large table or desk. I say large because you don't want to feel like you are boxed in. You also want to be able to spread out your materials to be available at a glance. I'll show off my space in a few weeks!

2| Remove Distractions

- Have a few fun things around that inspire you, but if it doesn't inspire and instead distracts, it needs to be removed from your area for the month. I know that concentrating on writing can be difficult to do when you are trying to do it day in and day out, so limiting the things that could cause you to loose focus is best.

3| Add Inspiration

- Not only do you have to have limited distractions while writing, but it is still best to be inspired! I'm looking forward to  fresh flowers and my favorite candle, along with character inspiration boards to help guide me when I'm trying to decide what a character would do.

4| Print your Notes, Inspiration boards, and Timeline

- Electronics are your biggest threat to your concentration. Get everything printed on nice paper and organize it in a nice binder. Or don't. Use the method that would work the best for you to find what you need when you need it.

5| Grab the Essentials

- I'll be covering this further next week when I talk about making your own NaNoWriMo Box. But a little preview would be to get a notebook for notes, your favorite candle to relax to, along with chargers for your phone and laptop.

Book Reveiw: His Endless Love

Sabra GilbertComment
Disclaimer: I received this book in return for an honest review. All comments made here are my own and completely honest for you, my reader.

His Endless Love is about a journey to find healing and acceptance through God's love and the wonderful ways it can change your life. When Samantha Sali set out to write a book, she could have gone in two completely different directions: a book that included viciously calling out her abusers and how she found Christ's love in spite of them, or show how Christ's love overcome everything and that love is one of thee greatest answers to any comment, action, or person.

In a time when everyone seems to be leaning towards hate and blame, it's so refreshing to hear from people who have been truly changed by love and in return have decided to show love in every situation. The writing has really spoke to me because of everything that has been going on in the media and of course Facebook politics with the Supreme Court decision and everything else that seems to come popping up these days. Love is struggling to be shone right now and Samantha brings back the fact that love should be shown no matter how people are treating you.

I loved how she not only shared her journey, but readers interviews as well. And while it can be easy to read a great book like this and not do anything about it, this book ends with information on a great project called the LOVE>hate Project.

If you are looking for a wonderful Christian book to encourage you this summer, I recommend that you order a copy of His Endless Love, and while you are there check out the other reviews. And if you wanna hear more from Samantha, you should try reading her blog as well, also titled His Endless Love.

Fun fact on another reason that you should check out Samantha's blog! As I was reading this book, Samantha started looking for contributors for her blog! I filled out the application as soon as I saw it, and now yours truly will be featured on His Endless Love every Thursday!!

Book Reveiw: The Graceling Realms

Sabra GilbertComment
I adore reading. Sometimes when the semester is just too crazy, I escape to a different world. It is one of my favorite things to do to just get lost in a great book, even better is if it comes with a series to continue as well. To be honest, I am in love with fantasy type worlds. Love. Love. Love them! I can spend hours upon hours completely lost in a series and not stop until all of the books are exausted. Simeon always laughs at me because he can hardly beleive how fast I can rip through a 3 or 5 book series.

To share my love for books, I wanted to share a series that completely stole my heart in the last few months! It isn't your typical series that follows one main character in a chronological way. While all three books of this series are in one relm, or world, each book jumps who the main character is, where it's taking place, and even where in the timeline that the book takes place. But you are able to easily connect all the books and the names of the main characters are unforgettable!

The first book of the series is called Graceling and it is the perfect opener to introduce a whole new world. Gracelings are people who have wonderful gifts. The appearance of a graced person includes two differently colored eyes and their gift can be discovered at any time in their life. It follows the graceling Katsa as she discovers who she really is, falls in love, and adventures through The Seven Kingdoms.

The second book of this series is named Fire and takes place around 30 or so years earlier to the first book and in a completely different part of the world than Katsa is even aware exsists. Fire is called a Monster in her culture. A monster is kind of like a Graceling except that her entire appearance is enhanced through bright colors in her hair and eyes that announce very specific kinds of gifts. This book covers her adventure through discovering how she can use her powers for good and not become like her father along with a path to true love.

The third book of this series is named Bitterblue and takes place 9 years after the initial Graceling story line and follows Bitterblue's story (a returning character from Graceling). Fire and Bitterblue are considered companion books. This book follows the story of Bitterblue as is still battling to conquer the mess that was handed to her when she received the crown 9 years ago. She discovers more tahn she ever thought she would about her Kingdom, it's history, and herself.

As complicated as it sounds, these series are really easy to follow and see the connections and follow along. It has truely been one of my favorite series that I've ever read! Right up there with Harry Potter (which says a lot coming from me!). I recommend that you go to your bookstore and find it right now!

My Rating Scale
1 = Watch Netflix instead
2 = Maybe on a rainy day
3 = Nook Order, you'll only read it once
4 = Great book, but not one I want to display for friends (Nook Book)
5 = Run to the Bookstore, you'll want to share it with everyone!

Book Review: Staying on Topic is Hard by Rachel Guerrero

Sabra GilbertComment
I love reading! Always have. It was always my favorite thing to do when I was younger to check out an amazingly large pile of books that the librarians at first would think that I would never finish before the two week deadline, and then bring them all back a week later. Having read every single one. After doing this a few times, the librarians started asking me questions, just to make sure that I had really read the book, and I could usually answer every single one corrrectly. In fact, I am pretty sure even on that AR tests that they make you take in school after reading a book, that I never missed a question until my senior year of high school (but who could blame me, Frankeinstein is a rough and overly long book to try to handle!).

I know not everyone loves reading. Some people are overly picky on what they will and won't read. But this is definatly a book that I would recommend, espetially for Christians and Newlyweds (or any part of the married lifestyle really!). There are so many stories that you can relate to in the volume of mini true life (Most, but not all!) stories by Rachel. Staying on Topic is Hard is a fun, quick read with witty commentary and everyday life.

It isn't a coninuous novel, but I find that the mini stories are fun to jump around and read the ones that strike your fancy from the title first and then go back and read others. (Is it just me or is it kind of fun when you don't have to read a book from cover to cover, but can jump around. It was one of my favorite parts of a couple Goosebumps books when I was younger, you know, the choose your journey ones!)

Want a preveiw of what it's like for newlywed's to suddenly share a bed? Read the story "Sharing a Bed."

Do you really love your Microwave? So does Rachel! Read story "Love Letter."

And there are a ton more that will have you giggling as well!

Want a copy for yourself? You can buy one here!

OR you can enter this giveaway for a free copy of the book!
